This zone works perfectly for a half-day itinerary: start at Connaught Place for breakfast and shopping, walk through Central Park, proceed to India Gate via Rajpath, and conclude with views of Rashtrapati Bhavan and Parliament House. The wide, tree-lined avenues make this area pleasant for walking or cycling.
South Delhi Heritage Circuit
South Delhi concentrates many of the city’s most beautiful historical monuments. Qutub Minar Complex deserves at least two hours for thorough exploration. A short drive leads to the Mehrauli Archaeological Park, which contains over 100 monuments spread across 200 acres, including Jamali Kamali Mosque and Rajon ki Baoli stepwell.
Hauz Khas Complex combines 14th-century Islamic architecture with modern village culture. Lodhi Gardens offers both historical tombs and peaceful greenery. Safdarjung Tomb, despite being less visited, provides beautiful Mughal gardens without the crowds. This zone suits a full-day itinerary with breaks for meals at Hauz Khas Village or nearby cafes.
Old Delhi: A Journey Through Time
Old Delhi (technically North Delhi) preserves the walled city of Shahjahanabad built by Shah Jahan. The Red Fort anchors the eastern end, connected to Chandni Chowk market by a busy road. Jama Masjid dominates the area with its massive scale and spiritual significance. Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial, provides a peaceful counterpoint to the area’s chaos.
Exploring Old Delhi requires at least half a day. Start early at the Red Fort, move to Jama Masjid, then dive into Chandni Chowk’s lanes for shopping and street food. The area’s narrow streets, best navigated by cycle rickshaw or on foot, reveal hidden havels, temples, and traditional markets. This zone offers the most authentic Delhi experience but can be overwhelming during peak hours.
East Delhi’s Spiritual Center
East Delhi’s primary attraction is Akshardham Temple, which alone requires 3-4 hours for a complete visit. The complex’s evening water show and exhibitions make it suitable for afternoon visits. The temple is easily accessible via metro on the Blue Line.
West and North Delhi
Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in West Delhi welcomes visitors throughout the day, with the community kitchen serving thousands daily. Jantar Mantar sits nearby, offering a quick but fascinating stop. North Delhi’s Civil Lines area features the Old Secretariat building and St. James Church, though these primarily appeal to architecture enthusiasts.
